Is your introduction effective?
Introducing yourself effectively to persons whom you wish to sell, but whom you are meeting for the first time is one of the most important but perhaps the most neglected activity that a Salesperson follows.
Why is it so important to introduce yourself powerfully ? An introduction is an introduction. What is so difficult that one should give it so much thought?
Normally, you meet someone, and you introduce yourself as follows:
I am Suhas Harshe. I work as a xxxxxxxxx in this company yyyyyyyy. Our company is into zzzzzzzz.
Is it exciting? Does it help to generate interest in what you do? After such a dull and boring introduction, why would the other person take interest in you or your business? Have you done anything different to arouse that interest? Have you done enough to maintain that interest? Will such introduction lead to any follow up meeting where you will get your chance to make your business presentation?
So what makes an introduction more impactful?
First, is obviously your name - spoken in a clear tone where the other person gets it right the first time. You do not have to repeat your name again or spell it out slowly. It is very embarrassing!
Second, introduce your organisation / profession in a manner which captures what is it that your company does differently. Is there a USP you can share?
Thirdly, speak about what is your role in the organisation. And by role, I do not mean your designation. Your designation is not important to anyone other than you. So many organisations across the business world have invented so many different designations that it would be a small miracle that just mentioning your designation would be enough for the other person to know what exactly you do. What we mean here is what are you responsible for ? What is the nature of your work?
Fourth, does it sound as if you are doing too many things? In that case, the other person is not likely to remember any one of those things. Be specific and focus on speaking about that one thing which you would like the other person to remember you for.
Fifth, limit your introduction to 30 seconds. Why 30 seconds? Because that is the amount of time a normal person gives to something he hears for the first time. You have only 30 seconds to grab his attention and make him interested in what you say.
Keep it simple - don't to use any jargon or technical words which has no meaning to a stranger. No one is impressed by the strange words you may use, which they do not understand.
And here is the ultimate test of whether your introduction is really effective?
Share it with your grand-mother. Is she be able to understand what you are saying? If yes, you are through. If not, keep trying till you prepare another introduction which everyone can understand, and is therefore, effective.
